How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Broken Key Ring
The internal chip in the key fob is what transmits to the immobilizer of your car in order to start the motor. This chip can be damaged or there could be programming mistakes. If this happens the key fob won't be able transmit the correct identification code, and your car won't start. A damaged transponder may be caused by physical damage to the key shell or wear and tear on the contact pads.
There are a lot of warning signs on your dashboard when a keyfob has trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These can include error messages, a flashing light or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you notice these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately for a replacement key fob or repair.
If you carry a lot of keys, it is easy to break your key ring. This can cause the key fob to split in half, which is one of the most frequent causes of broken car keys. If this happens, attempt to use super glue to repair it by applying a small amount of the glue to both sides of the break and carefully pressing them together. Make sure to use a gel type of glue that drys slowly so that you don't risk drips or runniness.

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the tiny key ring that is at the top, where it attaches the keyfob. It's believed to be made of extremely soft metal or plastic. I've drilled a hole, and then wet-sanded the area to strengthen it however, I'm assuming the problem isn't resolved by this.
I've also tried wrapping the broken part of ring with clear tape but it didn't look as good. It's a shame, because I use the tiny split ring to keep my keys in the right place.
If the key fob case is damaged It's usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). Online kits are available however they are only a temporary solution. It may be quicker to have it repaired by a mechanic. You can also locate the new case at a locksmith or home improvement store. They are not likely to be as expensive as an entirely new key fob.
